EVNTYD gets even with new single, “Spleen”

Date:

EVNTYD’s new single, “Spleen” is edgy and bordering intimidating. Imagine having something you have worked so hard on taken from you and there is nothing you can do about it because you have a smaller following than the thieves.

Julián Berdegué of EVNTYD, heard his song, “Quotidian,” off of his ten track debut album, being ripped off by a much larger band than himself. According to Berdegué, twenty seconds of their song closely resembled an Instagram reel he had posted a year before the release, “their song was written entirely with the main riff of my song.”

His new single, “Spleen,” is in response sharing his powerful sentiments of powerlessness against this group. “Cheap shot / There’s no use running out the back lot / You’ll never know what it’s like to get rocked “

Already able to play guitar, Berdegué taught himself to play the piano, bass, and drums during the COVID-19 pandemic. He then sought to construct his debut album, which was released in 2023 and called Eventide, which the song “Quotidian” was duped from.

“Spleen” has a chorus that sounds as if it came straight off of Room on Fire by The Strokes, explicitly reminding me of the punchy drums from “The Way It Is.”  Not only that, but I also hear a mix of the guitar riffs from Angles, also by The Strokes, specifically the song “Life Is Simple in the Moonlight.”

Berdegué’s raspy and slightly robotic tone shoves us into his headspace of frustration and distrust. The song is a complete and brimming with hints of DIIV and even Slow Pulp. EVNTYD delivers a catchy message about the unfortunate fate having your hard worked ripped off. “Tell me what you want / This is what it feels like / When you rip me off  / This is not a love song”
