NYC-based Evan Kreutz has released “deadbeat lullaby,” the lead single off his new EP, look what i can do. The indie pop-rock track takes you on a sonic and emotional journey as he explores themes of anxiety and self-worth.
The record opens with upbeat percussion and bright guitars before slowing down in the second half of the song, when it becomes an actual lullaby with light piano instrumentation and quiet, soft vocals. In the verses, the singer-songwriter openly sings about how his life plans aren’t going as expected: “I left home to make, well, I’m not sure / I left home but still I’m fucking poor, wow / These savings full of doubt.” With his raw lyricism and self-deprecating sense of humor, Kreutz instantly pulls in and connects with the listener.
About his confessional songwriting style on the new EP, Kreutz says:
“All these songs are things I’ve been through… I want people to listen and feel comfort when they can relate… If anyone has been through or is going through similar experiences, it is comforting to know they’re not the only ones”
If you take a look at his latest Instagram post, where he belts out the new track, the caption says, “This is what $24,587 of debt sounds like.” As shocking as it is to see an artist share such personal detail with their followers, Kreutz possesses a refreshing, relatable quality that effortlessly translates into his music and, more specifically, this new single, making it an inescapable listen.
