Estella Dawn is back with a very sexy, sultry new track titled “Move Down Lover.” This is her first original release of the year, following a string of covers including “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse, to whom Dawn has often been compared.
The San Francisco-based singer didn’t pull any punches with the new release, sharing on Instagram: “This one’s got teeth… sensual, raw, a lil unhinged.” The soulful track tells a story of someone who knows she’s hot, knows what she wants, and isn’t afraid to ask for it.
“Move Down Lover” seamlessly blends elements of pop, rock, and R&B to bring the listener through a sexy, dynamic push-and-pull, toeing the line between dominance and desire. In a statement, Dawn revealed:
“It’s about emotional power-play — being wanted, being in control, and being undone all at once. It’s vulnerable, yes, but also commanding. I wanted it to feel like a conversation between confidence and craving.”
Her vocal performance is so powerful — surprisingly so, to be honest. New listeners wouldn’t necessarily look at Dawn and expect such a big, bold voice, but she has this smoky, almost gritty quality that adds a lot in the way of soul and edge. The playful lead guitar was performed by Eben Grace, who struck a delicate balance of forward-sitting solos and rhythmic accents tucked a bit further back in the mix.
Dawn’s writing is also quite impressive. Clever lyrics like, “Throw me around the room, make a fat racket / leave me blind and out my clothes, that’s black magic / make me think I’ll lose you, I love to panic / I’ll walk away to make sure you’re looking back at it” set her apart in the pop landscape as an artist who can not only sing the hell out of a song, but also writes songs that deserve to be sung that way.
“Move Down Lover” is available to stream wherever you listen to music.
