eaJ pledges loyalty to love in “put it on me”

Date:

In a stream of constant releases over this year, pop artistĀ eaJĀ has unveiled another single tinged with hypnotic guitar lines and soothing vocals. In “put it on me,” the former Day6 member vows to always be there as an emotional anchor for those close to him.

A live and sharp hi-hat, kick and snare drum start “put it on me,” with a looser guitar melody providing a nice contrast. This contrast is highlighted in eaJ’s vocal melody, which switches between the two rhythms, creating an earworm for listeners to quickly get attached to. In the chorus, the reverb is turned up, with vocals filling up the space along with an acoustic guitar. The restraint of the verses soon hits as the chorus is cut short. However, some backing vocals in the second half of the song slowly build up anticipation for the final chorus. While the entire song stays well in the confines of pop and R&B, these small changes help keep up the excitement within a mostly chill song.

eaJ wanted the song to “feel like a late-night conversation you never want to hang up from.ā€ The lyrics most certainly reflect this with the first line “I don’t mess with trouble, but for you, I might be down for it.ā€ The song is laced with heartfelt confessions, with lines such as “Keep on talking / Got me in this trance.” Against the instrumentation, the lyrics feel all the more intimate as eaJ asks you to “give your problems to me.”

eaJ’s latest single continues the simple yet sophisticated stream of releases from the artist this year. “put it on me” shows the singer-songwriter at his most vulnerable yet steadfast.
