A new Devon Gabriella chapter is here following the release of her latest single, “Old Time’s Sake,” which sees the singer face a relationship that is just doomed in this emotional indie pop, singer-songwriter track.

She faces a toxic, on-again/off-again relationship that both people know will never really work, though they keep falling back into it out of nostalgia and habit. At the beginning of the track, Gabriella is thinking about an ex who moved away (“How’s the weather out in Georgia?”). It’s messy, complicated and even though time has passed, they are still drawn to one another like a moth to a flame — a push-and-pull dynamic.

As the chorus approaches, Gabriella explains that they repeat the same cycle: they get close, reconnect and then the other person disappears — though this time around, it’s expected. She sings, “It’s kinda sweet, you’re gonna leave me for old times’ sake / Oh, we’ve been here once before, we’ve played this game / The only thing you gotta do is go MIA.”

She gets into the knitty gritty that she always knew this was gonna happen by the bridge (“We know how this one ends”). She realized that even if they reconnect physically or emotionally, they’ll regret it afterward, but “old times’ sake” keeps pulling them back.
