Icelandic synthpop artist Daði Freyr has returned with his new single “Hot Damn,” and it’ll make you want to get off the couch and dance. His latest offering from his upcoming album Too Much, Not Enough, due out May 8, “Hot Damn” incorporates an electro-pop style with upbeat horns, creating a funky disco vibe that’ll have you moving no matter where you are.
The message of “Hot Damn” is universal: you’re settling down for a quiet night in, when last-minute plans to go out pop up in the group chat with your closest friends. The song starts off with a punchy beat over which Freyr smoothly describes being “all tucked in and feelin’ alright.”
This quickly progresses into the chorus after he receives an invitation to go out as he sings “I’m not missin’ out / so don’t go anywhere without me” over an emphatic guitar. A cheery horn section dominates the upbeat breakdown that follows, mimicking the energy and excitement that can come with spontaneous plans, before the second verse reveals that “I’m in a taxi” headed out for the night.
The message may seem simple at a glance, but Freyr explains that it’s actually about a deeper sense of connection:
“It’s a connection thing more than a wanting to do an activity. You just want to be included so your friends don’t make core memories without you.”
We’ve all experienced FOMO at one point or another, and this lighthearted and upbeat take on it inspires you to get up out of bed and take advantage of the night ahead. The beat makes it hard to sit still, perfectly accomplishing its goal of encouraging the listener to just have a good time.
