The track, built on 8-bit textures and glitchy vocals, is inspired by a relationship Cavetown has experienced.
“‘Rainbow Gal’ is like a light display turned into a song, she brings all the color into my life,” he says.

Per a release, Running With Scissors, sees the singer face drastic life changes, including falling in love with someone he wants to begin a family with the birth of his first sibling. They reportedly have a 26-year age gap, the release said. With intimidate storytelling, Cavetown explores anxiety, self-doubt and being a trans artist, all while facing adulthood, family, memory and self-parenting.
“I WANTED TO MAKE MYSELF SOUND MORE BRAVE,” HE SAYS. “AND I WANTED TO IMPRESS PEOPLE WITH MY VOICE, LIKE, ‘WOW, HE’S ACTUALLY GOT SOME PIPES.’”
