She is a generational talent, a triple threat, a…woman who needs no introduction. Brandy has built a long-lasting career in the entertainment industry, ever since fans first saw her on Moesha. She charmed audiences with her acting skills, but she also became a force in the music business. After releasing her self-titled quadruple platinum debut album in 1994, she went on to win a GRAMMY for “The Boy Is Mine” from her sophomore album, Never Say Never, establishing her as an R&B icon. This is already a striking résumé on its own, but Brandy has also been a Cover Girl, performed on Broadway, and became the first Black actress to portray a Disney princess on screen when she starred as Cinderella in the 1997 classic. There is so much to Brandy than we know, and she fills us in with her debut memoir, Phases.
Due out on March 31, Phases gives us an intimate look at Brandy’s life and career, from the crazy highs to the unfathomable lows. She takes us back to the moment when she first sang at her local church in McComb, Mississippi, and discovered that she had a gift. After honing that gift and seeing success in her early teen years, she then branched out into an acting career. There was a lot of love, a lot of light, and many new and extraordinary opportunities.
On the other hand, the stress of navigating a career in the spotlight proved challenging. Brandy dealt with maintaining an idea of “perfection,” doing her best to embody the flawless girl people saw on magazines and on their television screens. She was a Hollywood “it” girl, but who was she outside of this image?
Phases reveals the journey that Brandy took to find her true self, and while readers might not have had the same experiences Brandy has had, any reader who has struggled with their place in the world can understand. Overall, the memoir promises to be a beacon of determination, hope, strength, and resilience.
Phases by Brandy will be released on March 31 via Hanover Square Press, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. You can pre-order a copy here.
