When something is meant to be, it’s meant to be. After working with producer Patrick Lyons on his first-ever song, 17-year-old Brady Brazeal was ready to share it with his fans. But right when he started teasing the single, Brady broke his wrist playing baseball for his high school’s baseball team. This could have affected his ability to perform the song live, as it is tricky to play the guitar with a cast on your arm. However, Brady was still able to play, so the rollout for the single continued. It seems as if the universe was giving Brady its nod of approval, just encouraging “My Last Name” to be released.
An acoustic guitar-based track, “My Last Name” really lets the songwriting and the emotion shine through. Brady’s raw and gritty vocals complement the style of the song so well, effortlessly blending in with the twangy guitars and vulnerable lyrics. All the while, Brady sings about what it is like to grow up in a small town, and how a reputation can get around. With pure vigor, he sings, “I might have had a little too much last night, but I ain’t the one to blame / I got a blonde hair, blue-eyed kinda type, and it’s driving me insane / So I run around this old town trying to clean up my last name / But I can’t seem to find a way to burn out this old flame.”
About “My Last Name,” Brady shares,
“‘My Last Name’ is the first song I’ve ever written that I truly felt was perfect. I obviously wrote it about a blonde-haired, blue-eyed girl, but there’s just a deeper underlying meaning that I feel the listener can relate to in their own way.”
