If you’ve been searching for the perfect indie-pop song to blast in your car with all of the windows down, look no further than the latest by Balu Brigada. The Auckland brothers, Henry and Pierre Beasley, released another dynamic single, “Politix,” from their upcoming album Portal, set to debut on August 29.
With an introduction reminiscent of The National’s “Tropic Morning News” and Saint Motel’s “Van Horn,” “Politix” serves as a thought-provoking single that showcases the brothers’ innovative blend of soft vocals with an in-your-face guitar and catchy beat.
A standout transition in this song is when the instrumentals play backwards towards the end, with whispery vocals similar to Cage The Elephant’s Matt Shultz. Before you know it, the tempo kicks back up for one final punch, keeping listeners on their toes.
“Politix” follows the singles “The Question,” “What Do We Ever Really Know?,” and lead synthpop track “Backseat,” setting the tone for the band’s highly anticipated era of Portal. The alternative duo’s critically acclaimed single “So Cold” earned Balu Brigada their first number one hit on US Alternative Radio in 2024, and contributed to the band’s three million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 43 million streams to date. Landing a top spot on SiriusXM alternative charts, “Backseat” currently sits at 11 million streams (and counting) on Spotify.
With just a taste of what’s to come, these singles prove that Portal will undoubtedly be an album worth waiting for.
Portal is available to pre-save on streaming platforms here.
