Whether you’ve been a die-hard Samia fan or unforgettably stumbled upon the gut-wrenching lyrics “how long do I have left with my dog / ‘tilI start forgetting shit” from her viral song, “Pool,” there’s good news for you. The beautifully cryptic songwriter has announced a 5th anniversary edition of her debut album, The Baby, that will be released on Sept. 5. This edition will feature her viral November 2023 NPR Tiny Desk performance of her 2020 track, “Pool,” that has taken TikTok by a storm.
For those craving more painfully raw, entrancing live tracks by Samia, Volume 2 of this edition, coming in after the album’s original tracks in Volume 1, will feature additional performances from the NPR Tiny Desk Concert including “Is There Something in the Movies?,” and “Triptych” alongside “Pool.” For those who have seen Samia in concert and have experienced the mind-altering full-band version of “Is There Something in the Movies?,” it will finally be available for repeatable consumption at your own convenience.
Samia is also adding a creative twist to her 2020 album by including some of her previously released artist covers and alternative versions/remixes by some familiar names in the indie world, including Bartees Strange, Field Medic, The Districts, Briston Maroney, Christian Lee Hutson and more in Volume 3 of the anniversary edition.
This is following Samia’s release of her introspectively complex third album Bloodless in April of this year. Samia is also embarking on leg two of her Bloodless North American tour, where you can experience the magic of these tracks live.
On the virality of her NPR Tiny Desk performance of “Pool” and the 5-year anniversary of her debut album, Samia shares:
“Tiny Desk is like the GRAMMY’s to me – I still can’t believe they let me do that. I was struggling to stay conscious during the concert but it was the honor of a lifetime. The NPR version of ‘Pool’ resonating online is just a giant cartoon cherry on top. I’m still proud of ‘The Baby’ five years later and feel grateful that it’s meant something to some people.”
