Twenty One Pilots conclude decade-long story with “Breach”

Date:

The recap of the events from Blurryface leading up to Breach can be found here

After a heartfelt letter from Twenty One Pilots’ frontman on Aug. 16th, Tyler Joseph, fans learned that the ending of their decade-long story will be coming to end with their newest album, Breach.

In a video released on Wednesday, titled “I Am Torchbearer”, fans received one of the final pieces of the story. In it, the character Torchbearer, played by drummer Josh Dun, recaps who the Banditos are and where they come from. He then explains the group has continued to infiltrate Dema for the sole reason of trying to rescue Clancy, played by Tyler Joseph, the figure believed to be capable of defeating the Bishops. The Banditos have given him the tools to beat Nico and have enacted their plan for the fight for Trench, but this is the last chance they have.

Now that the album is here, along with the $1 million video for the first track, “City Walls,” we have the definitive ending of the story.

The ten minute long music video for “City Walls” was released alongside the album at midnight on Sept. 12th. Picking up where the “Paladin Strait” music video left off, the Banditos continue to fight in the city while Clancy confronts Nico. Up in the tower, we watch as the two begin to fight as Torchbearer and eight other Banditos rush up the tower to help Clancy. Meanwhile, Clancy begins having flashbacks of the other times throughout the story when he has confronted Nico (“Heavydirtysoul,” “Jumpsuit,” “Levitate”). After a violent confrontation, Clancy manages to defeat Nico, right as the Banditos burst in.

In what was expected to be a sweet reunion, Clancy turns around and we see that the black paint on his neck has risen to cover part of his face. He then dons the red Bishop robes and offers one to each of the Banditos to join him. The only one who does not accept is Torchbearer, who chooses to leave as the rest ascend to be the new Bishops.

Outside, Torchbearer packs up in preparation to leave as one of the Banditos approaches him. After a brief conversation, Torchbearer states that Clancy is still out there somewhere and they will continue searching for him to try again.

So what does it all mean?

Clancy did defeat Nico in the end, but ended up becoming the one thing he was fighting the whole time. It may seem like a tragic ending and that all is lost, but is it truly? Throughout the story of Clancy and the fight for Trench, the main theme has been always trying again and hoping for a better ending. The sun now shines in Dema and, while Clancy may have lost this battle, things are better and Torchbearer will continue to search for the one who will break the cycle.
