HS4 at midnight finally came true. Harry Styles made an album meant for DJ booths everywhere. On Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally., he swaps the lived-in pop palettes of his past work for the bright lights of dance floors, embracing a sound that was meant for late-night parties and crowded clubs. It’s carefree, a little indulgent, and the sound of Styles having fun and encouraging everyone else to do the same.

Can you believe it’s been 4 long years since we were last blessed with new music from Harry Styles? For casual listeners, that might not seem like much, but for someone like me who grew up with One Direction and has followed each of their solo careers, it’s felt like decades. And the 2 years where Styles disappeared on random side quests, like casually running a marathon? Yeah, that felt like an eternity.

The last time Styles left us, he was still in his late 20s, closing out Love On Tour and celebrating his Grammy-winning Album of the Year, Harry’s House. Since turning 30, he’s taken a look back on his career, telling Apple Music,

“It was just time for me to look at the way that I’d done everything. I think it’s a good thing to have moments, where you’ve done something for a long time, to kind of stop and check in with yourself: Do I do this because this is what I’ve been doing for a long time, or do I do this because I really love it?”

Styles ended his hiatus with a lead single that only comes from the freedom of being honest. He’s “let the light in” on “Aperture,” offering fans a chance to let go of whatever they’ve been holding onto so they, too, can feel free: “We belong together / It finally appears it’s only love / We belong together / We belong together.” The hit single debuted at No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100, marking his third, following “As It Was” and “Watermelon Sugar.”

“American Girls” was inspired by the singer’s need to find the person to “spend your life with.” When chatting about the LP with Zane Lowe, he admits, “It’s actually quite a lonely song in a lot of ways.” The track is an excellent reminder that we all thrive on connection, and even someone living as big a life as he does can still feel the weight of wanting something real, especially after your closest friends have all settled down.

“Ready, Steady, Go!” and “Are You Listening Yet?” are cut from the same cloth, reveling in disco-rock and quirky energy. And then on the flip side, we have “Coming Up Roses,” and “Paint By Numbers,” two softer ballads that we’ve come to expect from Styles. “Coming Up Roses” makes you appreciate relationships for what they teach you rather than how long they last. “The definition that we have of the success of a relationship is longevity and lasting for eternity, and I think it just negates all of the beauty and positivity that can come from a relationship where you learn something about yourself,” he says.

All of the tracks on this record have potential for some pretty epic remixes, but I think what I’m most excited to hear when I hit the dance floor are “Pop” and “Dance No More.” There’s something about them that feels liberating, making you feel fully alive. Speaking about “Dance No More” with Zane Lowe, Styles recalls: “I remember going out for the first time in Berlin and standing in the middle of the dance floor and feeling so unbelievably free and safe that I just had my hands in the air and my eyes closed and I just felt these tears streaming down my face. And it was this moment of, like, ‘I feel so alive right now.'” There is truly no better way to describe this song, or the album as a whole.

Fans can catch Styles on the Together, Together Tour later this year. Tickets are available here.
