COIN returned to Philadelphia to remind us they are not afraid of music anymore. The Nashville-based trio was adamant that the night would be one to remember, as fans flooded inside The Fillmore.
Playing a mixture of songs, thought mostly from their latest album I’m Not Afraid Of Music Anymore, COIN’s set had a little something for everyone. Beginning the set with the “It’s Hard To Care About Everything” followed by “Take It Or Leave It’, both songs a nod to the album’s sequence, as this was the order of songs in the respective album. The stage was set like a studio; an acrylic chair on stage left next to an old piece of recording equipment. Lawerence would often return to the chair, fiddling with the knobs throughout the show, changing the pace of the set.
After a variety of songs from Dreamland (2020) and Uncanny Valley (2022) were in the front half of the set, leaving their 2017 album How Will You Know If You Never Try, for the middle and latter half. Dedicating “Hannah” to all of the Hannahs in the crowd – and there were a quite a few – the ballads began. As the tempo slowed, there was a shift in the crowd, people pulling one another closer, others leaning on each other’s shoulders.
“We didn’t know if we wanted to make music,” lead singer Chase Lawrence confesses to the crowd. Phones fly up, red video recording buttons pressed, everyone listens. “We wanted to call it ‘We’re Not Afraid of Music Anymore’,” he continues, speaking about the tour’s title, alongside their latest album I’m Not Afraid of Music Anymore. Lawrence thanks the crowd for filling the venue, reminiscing on when the band was here last, during the summer of 2022. Thankful for the opportunity to play at this venue, in this city once again, the band was not shy about their journey nor their gratitude. The energy they brought to Philadelphia was infectious and lively, the way it has always felt listening to their music.
