Luke Hemmings embarked on his solo music journey, apart from 5 Seconds of Summer, during the pandemic. This marked the first time he experienced a period of stillness since he was 16 years old. His debut album reflects the introspection and challenges he faced during this newfound downtime.
Fast forward two and a half years and Luke Hemmings is stepping into a fresh chapter of his music career with his upcoming EP, boy. Leading the way is the dreamy single titled “Shakes.” which he says was written on a dreary night in New York and focuses on the feelings of longing for love and self-acceptance.
In his latest newsletter to his fans, he reveals that the songs in his upcoming EP were born during a time when he was unfamiliar with the concept of stillness, a stark contrast to his debut album. While traveling the world on tour with 5 Seconds of Summer, he scribbled down lyrics on anything he could find – napkins, hotel notepads, even old books – only to realize that amidst the vibrant energy surrounding him, he still grappled with a profound sense of loneliness.
The EP, comprising seven tracks, is produced by Sammy Witte, recognized for his work on Luke’s debut album, When Facing The Things We Turn Away From, and his collaborations with notable artists such as Harry Styles, Del Water Gap, and Halsey. Furthermore, it will feature songs co-written with Luke’s wife and songwriter, Sierra Deaton. Videos for several of the tracks will be released, creating a narrative and immersive experience for fans, and offering glimpses into how Luke views the world.
The EP “boy” is out April 26 and you can pre-order here.
