Leicester-based alt-pop artist Cj Pandit is starting 2024 off strong with his newest single “My Favourite T-Shirt”. Reminiscing on former relationships and sentimental items, the track is an offering from his upcoming debut album One Lost English Boy. Pandit comments further on the inspiration for this track:
“I lost my favourite t-shirt to an ex and it was their way to open communication for quite a while. It’s funny how items come to have a meaning or a purpose and then they become insignificant again. We wanted to make the most chaotic, intense pop song we could and I think we got pretty close. It’s like I’m writing and living in double time and I’m trying to play catch up.”
“My Favourite T-Shirt” fades in with some funky synths and drums before Pandit immediately starts singing the lyrics we’ll become very familiar with in the chorus. As he moves into the first verse, his voice becomes more raw and natural, setting the scene as he tries to get over a relationship while the person still lingers in his life. The following pre-chorus will have you nodding along.
The chorus starts up and we’re introduced to more complex instrumentals and background vocals supporting Pandit’s delivery. The change in instrumentals allows the chorus to sparkle as if Pandit is in a dream, standing out from the rest of the song.
In the second verse, Pandit asks questions about the state of the t-shirt that cleverly give us insight into how he’s feeling about the person who is still wearing it. The track moves swiftly along, driven by the drums and the chorus before we’re treated to the bridge. The first line utilizes choir vocals while Pandit’s raw voice emphasizes that they’re “wasting away”. The music warps before we head into the final chorus and the last words are sung without any instrumentals before we come to an abrupt end.
Pandit’s lyrical talent is clear from the way he cleverly uses the t-shirt as a device to let the listener know exactly how he’s feeling about the situation at hand. It’s something sentimental that everyone will be able to relate to in some way. When you add the complex instrumentals, the driving drum beat, and the fast vocals, you get a catchy, chaotic, and intense pop song, exactly like Pandit wanted. His goal was indeed successfully accomplished. Check out the music video:
