We caught Ashnikko at the NYC stop on her WEEDKILLER tour, September 26th at Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner with supporting act Audrey Nuna.
New Jersey native Audrey Nuna is a breakout artist and rapper who’s 2021 debut album a liquid breakfast put her on the map. Her tracks are constantly pushing boundaries with her take on R&B and rap. Dressed in a Garth Brooks tee and flowy pants, Audrey came out strong with “IdgaF” and “Sardines.” Half her set were unreleased tracks including the recently teased single “Cellulite” along with future releases “Cash,” “Goner Internet,” and “Me N My Baby” which included some fun audience participation. The other half were fan-favorites from a liquid breakfast – “Baby Blues,” “Comic Sans,” and “damn Right” as well as her latest single “locket.”
The venue is entirely outdoors, and despite the rain earlier in the day and the chill in the air, fans dressed for the occasion as mythical creatures (including lots of fairy’s) to celebrate the world that is WEEDKILLER. The product of Ashnikko’s imagination, WEEDKILLER is a concept album set in a dystopian future where a fae civilization is occupied and destroyed by machines (Weedkillers), while also touching on real world issues like sexual empowerment and the environment.
Ashnikko’s hour-long set was full of tracks from WEEDKILLER with “Possession of a Weapon” which touches on Roe vs Wade, the highly personal “Dying Star,” and “You Make Me Sick!” which puts an ex-boyfriend in his place. Known for her genre-bending hip-hop and electric pop (as well as her blue hair), Ashnikko has made waves since her first release in 2017, and didn’t forget her roots as she played early track “Invitation” from the 2018 EP Unlikeable, as well as “STUPID,” “Working Bitch,” and “Manners” from her 2019 EP Hi, It’s Me.
The rest of her set featured “Slumber Party,” and “Cry” from her mix-tape DEMIDEVIL, as well as four concept tracks from her Halloweenie series before closing her set with the heavy hitting “WEEDKILLER” and her empowerment track that packs a punch “Daisy.”
