Weekly Roundup: May 2

Date:

Every week the Melodic staff assembles a Weekly Roundup playlist of songs we can’t stop listening to. From pop to soul to rock n’ roll, we’re here to help you find your new favorite artist.
Here are some of the highlights:

1. “Tbh Idk” – Elyse Jewel
It’s actually kind of shocking that there hasn’t already been a popular song with these acronyms, but we’re glad that Elyse Jewel is here to fill the void. Safe to say that if you enjoy Olivia Rodrigo or GAYLE you’ll love this… but then again, tbh idk.

2. “There’s No Way Around It” – Breaking Sad
I’ve been binging Acceptance’s 2005 album, Phantoms,  lately, so no surprise that this song is hitting the spot right now. Dallas Green of City and Colour also comes to mind as a worthy comparison. If you’re seeking a new early-aughts-emo-esque tune to get into, this is your jam.

3.  “Blue Is Just a Colour” – Georgia Cécile
This one is a little different from our typical Weekly Roundup fare, but the driven, jazzy/soul heart of the song paired with Georgia Cécile’s vocal delivery come together to make a track that’s undeniably smooth. Cécile breathes loads of attitude and finesse into the lyrics with nuanced phrasing techniques that she makes sound much simpler to do than they actually are. Give it a listen and hear for yourself.

4. “Hurricane” – DOROTHY
When I first listened to this, the name of the song, in addition to the overall glam rock n’ roll vibe, immediately made me think of Scorpion’s “Rock You Like A Hurricane.” However, this song is WAY better and, frankly, badass to the nth degree. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it’s as if Dorothy is reclaiming the “hurricane” metaphor to be something powerful as opposed to a euphemism for sex with a “b*tch” who’s “hungry” (yes, actual lyrics in the Scorpion song. See also: a music video featuring women chained and in cages. Yuck.) I’m a fan.

5. “Preach” – Emarosa
Color me clueless, but I was totally shocked when I found out this was a single by Emarosa. I’m not super familiar with the band, but from what I recall of my days wearing Hot Topic and reading Alternative Press they did NOT sound like this. That said, this very Lauv/The 1975 sound seems to suit them well. Preach on, Emarosa.
