Happy to be Here, the debut album from Brooklyn-based songwriter Barrie, was one of the best surprises of 2019. After a groundswell of support from dream-poppy tracks like “Geology” and “Clovers”, the band’s debut was a perfect piece of indie-pop that seemed designed to take over the listening world. If you haven’t heard it, I highly recommend you go dive into it — a remarkable amount of the indie landscape looks like Barrie now following that album’s release and success. After a year of touring the album, Barrie Lindsay amicably disbanded the project in that form and took some time to herself — from that time period comes the announcement of her new album Barbara, which is due March 25th via Winspear.
We’ve already heard two of the songs off of Barbara in last year’s “Dig” and “Frankie“, which suggested a jauntier, more artpop-esque vibe from the incredibly talented artist. Today’s single “Quarry” is a little more in line with what we’ve heard off of Happy to Be Here, but it takes on a structure that’s akin to a power ballad with hazy synths surrounding Lindsay’s instantly recognizable voice. Watch the Robert Kolodny-directed video for “Quarry” below, and preorder Barbara here.
