Show Preview: Summer Cannibals

Date:

Portland rockers Summer Cannibals have had a packed month of August, rounding off the summer season by touring their 2019 release, “Can’t Tell Me No.”

While they may have creeped past your radar in previous years, the band’s latest record —packed with bass grooves, grinding riffage, and infectious hooks that prompt visions of Sleater-Kinney— is not to be missed. Musically bombastic and lyrically seething with self awareness, “Can’t Tell Me No” serves as a sort of healing protest grounds for both the band and listeners alike; frontwoman Jessica Boudreaux scrapped what would have been the band’s fourth album last fall following a reckoning within the Portland indie music scene regarding corruption and manipulation from within the industry. Such a reaction is not only politically and musically refreshing, but appropriate, given the band’s labelmates at Kill Rock Stars include Riot grrrl linchpins like Bikini Kill and Bratmobile.

Summer Cannibals will be joined by Athens rockers Scooterbabe and art-punk five-piece Silver Lake Waves at their Atlanta show on August 21, 2019, at The Masquerade. Check out the music video for the band’s title single below!
