Some venues have a way of making a loud night feel intimate. The Ryman Auditorium is one of them, and Dogstar’s August 5 show in Nashville proved it once again.
The Backfires opened with energy to spare, quickly winning over the crowd with a young, hungry sound that suited the room well. They weren’t just a warm-up act as they left an impression of their own and got the audience ready for what came next.
As Dogstar took the stage, and the whole room shifted as the crowd began to cheer. What made the set memorable wasn’t spectacle. It was the obvious chemistry among the three musicians and the sense that they genuinely liked being up there together. Bret Domrose fronted the band with a relaxed confidence, Robert Mailhouse anchored everything from behind the drums, and Keanu Reeves held down bass, not as a novelty, but simply as one-third of a band doing its job. That’s the right way to take in a Dogstar show.
Their music skips the gimmicks. It’s guitar-driven rock built on melody, feeling, and just enough edge to keep it interesting. The songs are given room to breathe, and the band trusts the material to carry the night rather than leaning on theatrics. Domrose was a standout frontman, his vocals lending real character to the songs, his easy rapport with the crowd making the night feel less like a rehearsed show and more like three guys playing music for people who wanted to be there. And the Ryman crowd wanted to be there. They sang along, cheered between songs, and kept a real back-and-forth with the stage going all night, the kind of connection that’s easy to lose in bigger venues but came through clearly here.
Dogstar isn’t chasing anything. They’re not out to be the loudest or flashiest band around, they’re just a group of guys who enjoy playing together, and it shows. Reeves’ presence naturally adds something extra to the experience. It’s hard to forget that a famous actor is standing on stage with a bass guitar. But as the set wore on, that faded into the background, and the music took over, exactly as it should.
By the final song, Dogstar had pulled off something trickier than it sounds: a genuinely fun rock show, delivered without unnecessary flourish. No gimmicks required, just three musicians, a solid set of songs, and one of the best rooms in the country.
For a Wednesday night in Nashville, that’s about as good as it gets.
