Yellowcard’s William Ryan Key tries to escape the past on reflective “Brighton”

Date:

Next month, multi-instrumentalist and former Yellowcard vocalist William Ryan Key will be releasing his third solo EP, Everything Except Desire.  The EP is expected to bring Key into more experimental territory, one that really deviates from the pop punk genre that fans have heard from him in the past.  A few weeks ago, Key released the project’s first single “Face in a Frame,” which ushered in this new, cinematic sound.  Filled with shimmering synth and charming vocals, “Face in a Frame” made a strong impression, and Key is ready to maintain this image with the follow-up single “Brighton.”

On “Brighton,” Key analyzes past events that have prevented him from moving forward in life.  Over charismatic synth and moody percussion, the lyrics contain questions regarding reality and illusion.  Calmly, Key sings, “Tell some truth beyond the words you find” and “I can’t say I’m ever right or wrong,” determined to find meaning.  It all builds to intense choruses that are filled with soaring melodies and swelling rhythms.  You can check it out below.

Key started work on Everything Except Desire in 2020 with friends Ryan Mendez, Erich Talaba, and Mike Kalajian.  At the time, Key was determined to figure out his vulnerability and why it would sneak up on him at the wrong time.  As a result, the EP gets very personal and touches on topics such as mental health and toxicity.  The track listing is as follows:

1.) The Swim Back
2.) Face in a Frame
3.) Brighton
4.) Heavens
5.) Union Chapel

Everything Except Desire will be released February 11, 2022, via Equal Vision Records.  You can pre-order it here.
