Under The Rug’s “laugh a lot” Finds Light in Dark Times

Date:

Austin’s indie outfit Under The Rug continues their heartfelt musical journey with their latest single “laugh a lot”, a track that juxtaposes levity against life’s anxieties and horrors. Known for blending indie folk, rock, and pop with a strong emphasis on storytelling, the band—comprised of vocalist and guitarist Casey Dayan, guitarist Sean Campbell, and drummer Brendan McQueeney—has built a dedicated fan base through their authentic, DIY approach.

“laugh a lot” is the second single from the band’s upcoming two-part album, happiness is easy. Produced with David Peters and featuring contributions from Sam Hollander and Mason Jennings, the album explores themes of joy, resilience, and the human experience.

The track captures the profound beauty found in life’s challenging moments, with Dayan sharing a poignant story of being a closeted trans person in a motel where the mundane presence of a cockroach on a lamp becomes an unexpected comfort, highlighting the song’s central theme: finding sweetness in the seemingly unfavorable.

Lyrically, “laugh a lot” navigates the tension between strength and self-pity, celebrating the intricate dance between joy and sorrow. Lines like “So many times I’ve woken up into the worst parts of my life and laughed, and I think that’s beautiful somehow” showcase the band’s ability to find humor amidst hardship. The song’s blend of gentle arpeggios, evocative lyrics, and piercing guitar melodies resonate deeply, making it an instant favorite for fans of indie music.

As anticipation builds for the release of happiness is easy Part 1, Under The Rug prepares for their headlining US tour starting this August. Known for their engaging live performances, the band’s raw emotion and authenticity will undoubtedly shine on stage, providing a unique experience for their audience.
