Rising pop punk artist Tyler Shamy has released his first single of 2026, starting off the year with “Potential“.
Accompanying the single, Shamy has released two mini music videos. Both 40-second videos are titled “Contemporary Partner Dance to ‘Potential'” and feature a couple in and near a subway car. Each piece is a choreographed contemporary musical number, heavily showcasing the emotional push-and-pull Shamy sings about on the track.
“Potential” explores the pain and regret felt after falling in love with what a person could be, rather than what they actually are. Shamy explores missing red flags, moving too fast, and the ways we beat ourselves up when we realize that the person we had on a pedestal didn’t deserve it, or us. Instead of resorting to being angry, Shamy stirs in more of a disappointed self-reflection, recognizing that the relationship was doomed from the start, but he chose to believe in the possibility of love.
In an Instagram post back in promoting the song back in December 2025, the songwriter called the song “One of [his] favorites off the album…”
