Sometimes a simple love song is all you need, and LA-based Specific Coast delivers this heartwarming intimacy in his latest single “On My Way.” Keeping things short and sweet, the song is perfect for listeners of Iron & Wine and Caiola.
A tangy acoustic guitar melody starts off the song with a soft piano subtly giving some weight to the opening verse. Matt Dunne, who is the singer-songwriter behind Specific Coast, still keeps the rest of the instrumentation light with a shallow kick drum and and sharp percussion as the artist confides in a lover. In the second half of the song, an electric guitar picks up some pace before a whistle in the outro returns the song to the laid-back tone.
“On My Way” focuses on a long-standing love and is laced with the simple imagery of everyday intimacy. The opening line, “My baby’s got a notepad full of ‘love you’s and coffee stains,” perfectly establishes the homey feel of the single. This focus on the seemly insignificant moments of life makes the song all the more relatable to listeners with other similar lines such as “punching in and out is hopeless without you here.”
Specific Coast’s latest single doesn’t try to be anything more than a simple love song, but this focus on simplicity is what makes the song softly beautiful and personal.
