Punk music means many things to many people. To some, it is represented by one band. To others, it comes from one place. But if you ask me, punk music is punk music. It’s not defined by any one band, one place, one album…
Over the years, plenty of books about punk have been written, but most focus on its history in one region, tracing how the scene evolved and who came from where… In Tim Stegall’s Anarchy In The Studio: Punk Music 1970-1979, The Rise of Punk Rock, readers will be treated to a comprehensive punk music history that focuses on bands from all over. We travel to America, England, Canada, and Australia, with details about how each country influenced its own scene. The book dives through this scene, touching on everything from the clothes to the books, and from the record labels to DIY culture. There’s also the albums…
Starting with MC5’s Back In The USA and The Stooges’ Fun House and ending with The Clash’s London Calling and The Pretenders’ self-titled debut, Stegall gives a strong analysis on over 140 of the decade’s essential albums. Fans will get all of the inside scoop—private anecdotes and facts to origin stories—that relates to the punk world. Also included in the book’s 512 pages are over 200 photographs from some of the best early punk photographers like Ralph Alfonso, Frank Gargani, Theresa Kereakes, and Ruby Ray. Some of these photos have not even been in print since the ‘70s.
