Rachel Chinouriri brought her first-ever headlining show to the Boston area, performing at The Sinclair in Cambridge on May 18 as part of her inaugural All I Ever Asked For Was A North American Tour. The British indie-pop artist, fresh off the release of her critically acclaimed debut album, What a Devastating Turn of Events, captivated the audience with her heartfelt storytelling and genre-blending sound.

Chinouriri first began releasing music in 2018, and her rise to fame has been seven years in the making. Though not an overnight success, she’s clearly having her moment: selling out a 525 capacity venue just minutes from Harvard. Even before she stepped on stage, it was obvious: this would be the last time I’d see her play a venue this intimate.

I have to say, I was genuinely impressed by Chinouriri’s openers, BIZZY and Alemeda. Both artists captivated the crowd from the moment they stepped on stage, delivering powerful vocals and undeniable energy. Their performances felt polished and engaging, easily some of the best opening acts I’ve seen at a show in a long time.

Next up was the queen herself. Chinouriri opened her set with “Garden of Eden,” and the crowd instantly erupted: cheering, clapping, and screaming every word of the opening track. The energy in the room was electric, and witnessing that level of connection between artist and audience was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Chinouriri delivered a 75-minute set, opening with a string of album cuts including “My Everything,” “Dumb Bitch Juice,” and the emotional ballad “Robbed,” a song she wrote about the passing of her niece. “I feel like when you lose someone unexpectedly, or when you don’t feel ready, there’s never really a way of getting over it,” she shared with the crowd. It was one of the most moving moments of the night with every single person in the audience standing still, fully present, hanging onto her every word.

Chinouriri closed the night with her four biggest hits: “The Hills,” “Can We Talk About Isaac?,” “All I Ever Asked,” and finally, “Never Need Me.” Hearing “All I Ever Asked” live after becoming obsessed with it back in 2022 was nothing short of surreal. During the final chorus, she invited the crowd to sing along. Then, before repeating it, she leaned into the mic and commanded, “Scream it!” The audience didn’t hesitate: shouting the lyrics like they had been written just for them.

Rachel Chinouriri’s Boston debut wasn’t just a concert: it was a testament to her growth as an artist and the genuine connection she’s built with her fans. From start to finish, she owned the stage with vulnerability, confidence, and joy. If this night was any indication, she’s only just beginning to carve out her place as one of indie pop’s most compelling voices. And for those lucky enough to see her in a room this size, it felt like witnessing history in real time.
