Perth trio Fool Nelson are back with their brand new EP Bad Dreams, released October 17th via AWAL. The band consists of brothers Tom and Ned Broadbent, alongside best friend Darcy Steven. These three have been making music together since childhood, and you can hear that in their sound. The EP is classic indie rock: driving, exciting, and easy-listening.
They described Bad Dreams as “an outlet for our anxieties,” and said it’s also about “sticking close to the people you love.” These feelings linger quietly through the record, giving each song a sense of emotion that sits beneath every track.
Their music reflects both their upbringing in Perth’s surf and skate culture and the 90s/2000s rock they grew up on. The guitars crash and shimmer with a nostalgic edge, while the choruses hit with the kind of energy that belongs in a packed venue. There’s a rawness to their sound that feels lived-in; unpolished in a way that makes them authentic.
Across five new songs, Fool Nelson capture the anxiety of growing up. “Forget It,” in particular, is a standout track on the EP, sounding built for the stage with its raw lyrics and defiant chorus.
Rolling Stone Australia published an article earlier this year, Fresh Sounds: Why Fool Nelson Might Be Your Next Favourite Aussie Band, and Fool Nelson are well on their way to proving that right.
