Oren Levin releases “Can I ride it out alone?”

Date:

For those who are fans of the music of both Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, Oren Levin‘s release “Can I Ride it Out Alone?” may provide that perfect fix of new content.

The song’s ambiguous lyrics can be be applied to just about any situation, making it a piece that can support the listener as their mood oscillates from high to low, good to bad. Throughout the three minutes and 25 seconds of the track, the arrangement goes through a metamorphosis of production, creating a yin and yang of darker, more daunting sounds and upbeat synth.

In the opening of the track, the synth has a similar sound to Eilish’s 2019 song “ilomilo.” As it progresses, this layer of the arrangement blossoms into brighter-sounding aspect, which transforms Levin’s sound as a whole.

With vocal inflections that draw faint similarities to that of Quinn XCII, Levin manages to marry two vastly different sects of the indie-pop genre in a way that somehow still feels so natural. On the one hand, those who listen to the likes of Chelsea Cutler, Jeremy Zucker, and Quinn may find aspects of Levin’s music to be attractive. On another hand, fans of Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Gracie Abrams might find aspects of the track that excite them, particularly in the wake of Rodrigo’s new, smashing album “guts.”
