Alien boy Oliver Tree released his first solo work in two years with his latest single “Superhero.” The singer-songwriter last debuted his third studio album, Alone In A Crowd, in 2023, leaving fans hungry for more.
The first insight into Tree’s upcoming fourth album, Love You Madly, Hate You Badly, “Superhero” is a return to the Santa Cruz singer’s indie-rock roots. Fans who are eager for a bold, classically-Oliver-Tree-sounding new song are in luck: with a brief country-folk stint in 2022 and a dominant hip-hop vibe on his last album, this new song belongs among the likes of his debut album, Ugly Is Beautiful (2020).
“Superhero” gives a voice to those who feel like theirs is overshadowed, sharing a story of how everyone can have super abilities in their own right. Tree himself describes the anthem: “It’s about embracing what makes you different […] When people don’t get you, that’s your superpower.” He projects this message with lyrics like, “Hey, I’m the bad guy hеre to save the day / I’m a supеrhero, but in my own way / How you could never see it was a damn shame…”
Within the track, the “Hurt” singer makes references to his previous work, including the single “A-Okay” from Cowboy Tears Down the World in a Swimming Pool of Sorrow (2022), and the loneliness explored in Alone In A Crowd.
Oliver Tree trades in his iconic bowl cut and Cowboy Tears-era blonde bowl-cut-meets-mullet for a unique brunette look in the “Superhero” music video, and somehow, this is the tamest part of the project.
Featuring the consumption of numerous mushy items, including pet-friendly foods, Tree spends his epic return to music lounging in the backyard, sweating it out in the sauna, and relaxing with an intriguing cold-cut face mask – all before hunting himself in the woods.
While the music video may be labeled as the “official unofficial” version with a zero-dollar budget (according to the description), there is no doubt that this is a typical, thought-provoking Oliver Tree spectacle that is sure to make fans laugh, question, and maybe even throw up in their mouths a little.
After spending the last two years recording his upcoming album, Oliver Tree announced he will premiere his fourth studio album titled Love You Madly, Hate You Badly. While the project does not have an official release date, it is available to pre-save on most streaming platforms here.
