Australia’s Oliver Cronin has let listeners have another taste of his upcoming album Paradise with the infectious pop song “Room For Two.” Channeling the likes of The Kid LAROI and Benny Blanco, Cronin sets his lovesick lyrics against a catchy electro-pop beat.
The song tells the tale of distance within a relationship as Cronin laments “I know that you can’t sleep / My side of the bed is cold.” The lyrics don’t shy away from the song’s message, with the direct confessions sounding like a journal entry. While the lyrics aren’t overly poetic, the focus is on the melody, which is sure to become ingrained your mind by being repeated by the bass line. Understanding that it is normal for electro-pop not to have super drastic changes in energy, the only downside of this song is the lack of a strong bridge or change in pace, which in turn makes the song sound shorter than it actually is.
The instrumentation is also very typical for this style of pop. A rhythm guitar, kick and snare drum and bass take up most of the mix. The bass line gives the song most of its subtle movement as it cleverly carries the instrumentation whilst being quietly hidden within the mix. A sparkly lead guitar and electric keys that offer a counter-melody from the first chorus onwards let the song have a sense of individuality against the genre-typical drums and rhythm guitar.
