Singer and songwriter Violet Grohl makes her official debut with “THUM” and “Applefish.”
At only 19 years old, Violet is no stranger when it comes to investing in her artistic endeavors. From posting photography on Instagram to performing with her dad (Dave Grohl) at the Fire Aid Benefit that took place in Los Angeles earlier this year, Violet is a creative who showcases her work in elegant fashion.
This past Friday, Violet released two singles she’s been working on over the past year. Beaming with gratitude, she wrote:
“I’m beyond excited to finally share a little bit of what I’ve been working on over the last year. I made these tracks with the most badass group of musicians, so happy they’re finally yours:)”
“THUM” is a two-minute indie-rock ballad that exhibits the feeling of wanting to soothe one’s anxiety: “Paint on / Suck my thumb of citric acetone / When I’m left alone / Self help me / Self help myself / Chew my bitter fingers / Can’t help me / Can’t help myself / Buy it by the liter.” Here, the lyrics hint at using a chemical as a way to ease the pain. As the song progresses, it doesn’t shy away from the idea of needing an escape from one’s internal thoughts.
Similarly, “Applefish” is an electric anthem that displays the feeling of loneliness. Instantly, listeners are pulled in: “No past to escape to / Greetings from the other side / Empty road humming by / Friends across the river / Pull me from the water / Return denied / Black crow / Fix of dawn / Kiss of death / Siren song / Walk alone, stranded on the shore.” “Applefish” brings listeners to a standstill, highlighting themes of alienation and detachment.
With her talented presence, Violet Grohl is an artist to keep on your radar. “THUM” and “Applefish” are only available to stream and purchase on Bandcamp.
