Alternative rock sibling duo The Haunt is launching full force into a ghostly and gothic new era. Earlier this year, the band released “Ghost” and “Favorite Way To Die,” a set of tracks that delve into the complex emotions of pouring yourself into a relationship that does nothing but hurt you.
Their newest single “Alone On Your Planet” encapsulates the point of no return in that kind of relationship. It’s the moment when you’ve finally had enough. The track begins with an eclectic, futuristic synth beat that sounds like someone pressing buttons on the command panel of a rocket. Soon, the electric guitar and drums blast through the speakers and it is as though the rocket has taken off.
Anastasia Grace Haunt’s vocals are laced with anger and agony as she cries “This nightmare used to be my dream / now everything I wanted scares the fuck out of me.” It’s as though she’s just as angry at herself for letting her guard down as she is at the partner who manipulated her into staying in the relationship for so long.
The song is firmly planted in a situation that feels universal, but is oftentimes hard to describe. There’s a visceral quality to the bridge: that desire to put something away forever and write a relationship off as entirely bad so when it ends, it hurts less.
The song is practically dripping with late 90s and early 2000s nostalgia, which is fitting of a track produced by John Feldman (blink-182, Good Charlotte). The visuals for the song intensify this. The carnivalesque music video released alongside the song is aesthetically reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins. The juxtaposition between these nostalgic elements with the sharp cuts to a dimly lit graffitied bathroom gives it a sharp edge that helps the video feel unique and fresh.
