In the songs that she writes and the stories that she sings, Laila Mach leaves a mark. She gives listeners certain moments that are worth savoring and holding onto, and with each release, these moments only get stronger. In 2023, her breakthrough single “In Secret” transformed her from a burgeoning artist on TikTok to an influential singer-songwriter with “ones to watch” potential. “In Secret” now has over 7M streams on Spotify.
This past May, Mach independently released “LYING,” a pensive indie-pop song that touches on the undoing of a relationship. Mach’s fans were drawn to the song, as is often the case, which is why it now has over 1M streams. As the streams continue to climb, so does Mach’s status as an artist. She recently signed to VERSION III, and through this label, she plans to release her debut album.
But first, Mach gives us “MUTUAL.” Written with Micah Wilshire and Lydia Sutherland, “MUTUAL” is an intimate indie-pop tune about denial. Over an ambient production filled with resonant beats and poppy guitar, Mach tells herself that her recent heartbreak came from a mutual place. With sweet vocals, she sings, “We were never more than casual / Us breaking up was mutual / I swear I’m not delusional / Us breaking up was mutual.” Is she lying or is she telling the truth?
