Swedish artist Ellen Benediktson has always known how to deliver a strong pop hook but on “Only Lovers,” she sharpens that instinct into something darker, messier, and far more addictive. Taken from her new EP WID4L, the track captures the exact moment where love stops feeling safe and starts feeling consuming.

When the song starts, there’s no long instrumental build-up, no dramatic introduction trying to set the mood first. The song begins with her voice right in front of you, almost interrupting the silence. Those airy vocalisations, the “ouh ah ouh ah” melody weaving through the intro and chorus, become hypnotic almost instantly.

Musically, “Only Lovers” balances tension and release brilliantly. The verses stay tight and restrained, carrying a nervous energy that feels constantly on edge, before the chorus bursts open into something euphoric and emotionally overwhelming. That contrast gives the song its pulse. It feels dramatic in a very physical way, like spiraling emotions turning into movement.

Lyrically, Ellen Benediktson explores the dangerous habit of romanticising emotional destruction, treating heartbreak almost like proof that a relationship mattered. There’s self-awareness in the writing but no real desire to escape the cycle. That tension between clarity and recklessness gives the track its bite.

The wider WID4L EP expands on those ideas of obsession, jealousy, impulsivity, and emotional excess. “Only Lovers” perfectly introduces the world of the record: beautiful, dramatic, slightly self-destructive, and fully aware of it.
