Diving head first into another new year of music releases, hip-hop sensation Doechii drops a surprise collaboration featuring SZA in a single titled “girl, get up,” whilst also sampling Birdman and Clipse’s “What Happened To That Boy (2002.)”
Being the clever and calculated response to a world of misogyny, racism, and accusations, “girl, get up” is a powerful reminder not only to Doechii- but to all black women within the music industry to keep standing tall in the face of hate. Specifically relating back to the artist herself, she responds to accusations of being considered an “industry plant” amidst her rising fame and popularity amongst Gen Z listeners and others.
It takes a certain amount of confidence to expose the dark side to the music industry faced by women, but it takes a pioneer to express its effects for women of color, and there is much praise to be given (and respect) to both Doechii and SZA for continuing to enlighten and encourage themselves and a line of other artists to find their authenticity and truth in a place where many have been shot down before. So in light of New Year’s resolutions: girl, get up.
Lyrics from ‘girl, get up:’ “But what’s the agenda when the it girl black?/ Y’all can’t fathom that I work this hard/ and y’all can’t fathom that I earned this chart/ Y’all can’t stand my vibe ’cause I’m anointed/ all y’all evil… just annoyin’.”
