This has been such a good week for upcoming folk-pop singer Brenn! that I don’t even know where to start.
I guess we’ll begin with the announcement of his debut album, AMATEUR AT BEST, which is set to arrive June 12. This album brings listeners through the past couple of years, where Brenn! experienced astounding highs and crushing lows. With the expertise of songwriter Maddox Shafer, the two created a 12-track project that takes coming-of-age themes and connects them through baseball imagery—yes, baseball imagery. Meanwhile, listeners will hear a cool and ragged blend of banjo and electronic guitars against Brenn!’s compelling vocals and endearing underdog style. He explains,
“I wanted this album to be very organic, homegrown, unpolished—we didn’t worry about every note being in the right place or every beat being on time. I wanted it to be an extension of myself, and I’m not perfect.”
Let’s see, there’s also the wrap up of his headline ‘The Warm Up tour,” which began back in April. The tour brought Brenn! across the U.S., where he played cities like Albany, Richmond, Orlando, and Kansas City with special guest Hudson Ingram. The tour is set to conclude this weekend. But for those who didn’t make it out to a show, Brenn! will be heading out on the ‘AMATEUR AT BEST World Tour’ in June. And to bring this week to a solid close, Brenn! is giving fans “SHIVER” from the upcoming album. The single is about the devastating reality of being haunted by a past relationship. It’s like no matter how much time passes or how right you were to let things go, the former love can always find a way back. Here, Brenn! reflects, “I know I can’t just wait / For something that’s not on its way” and “Cut off all my bitterness and every part of you that I’ve got left.” He then concludes, “All of you has left me cold as I’ve ever been.” It is all set against acoustic guitar, banjo and drums that bring the song into a cinematic and vulnerable place. Brenn! also goes interesting places vocally and melodically, enhancing the “organic” and “homegrown” spirit of the album.
