Basement unveils “The Way I Feel,” the third single from ‘WIRED’

Date:

Ahead of their first album in eight years, Basement is back and hitting the ground running.

The emo-shoegaze staples began teasing their highly anticipated return 10 weeks ago through a series of immersive fan campaigns. From cryptic social media drops to pop-up listening sessions, the rollout gave fans a chance to preview unreleased tracks and piece together clues about the new record.

On March 3, the band officially entered their new era by surprise-dropping double singles, “WIRED” and “Broken By Design.” Their latest offering, “The Way I Feel” (released March 30), invites the listener to explore the internal friction required to take big risks.

The track’s music video, directed by Kaylinn Duffy (Fiddlehead, Mat Kerekes, and Lola Young), is set against a backdrop of urban exploration and a screening of the cult classic The Princess Bride. The narrative focuses on a young man’s experience with male companionship, self-expression, and bravery.

An opening loop-pedal sample crafted by guitarist Alex Henery, of Basement and Fiddlehead, sets a tone that feels both fresh and classic to the band’s sound. “I never thought Basement could sound like this,” he remarked, “But in my head, it’s what I’ve always wanted Basement to sound like.”

Distortion on Andrew Fisher’s vocals mirrors the elusive yet beautiful experience of coming into yourself. He shares:

“[The track] is about standing on the edge of a really important decision, right before you make it, constantly questioning whether you have the courage to stand up for yourself and fight your side, while at the same time begging for forgiveness and acknowledgement. My tongue is in my cheek quite a lot in this song. You need to decide when I’m saying what I mean or not.”

Basement’s new album WIRED is out May 8, reuniting them with their original label, Run For Cover Records.

You can find Basement on tour with their friends in Fiddlehead and Glare this summer. Tickets are available here.
