American Football teams up with Turnstile’s Brendan Yates for new single “No Feeling”

Ahead of their fourth studio album, American Football (LP4) — arriving May 1st via Polyvinyl Record Co. — American Football has released “No Feeling,” a new collaboration featuring Brendan Yates of the hardcore band Turnstile.

Produced by Sonny DiPerri (Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine, Portugal. The Man), “No Feeling” explores a descent into emotional numbness and self-destruction as one gets older. Frontman Mike Kinsella’s vulnerability anchors the track; as he sings, “Help me dig a hole / I’m already cold / I honestly never planned on getting old,” he articulates a profound sense of disassociation towards his own aging.

The much-anticipated upcoming album is a masterclass in the layered, somewhat confrontational Midwest rock that American Football does so well. Listeners can expect tracks that spotlight life’s harsher realities, reflecting on compromise, grief, and being middle-aged.

Reflecting on the value of creative synergy and the power of following one’s instincts, Kinsella shared this regarding the collaboration with Yates:

“Brendan came into the studio to sing along to a ‘gang vocal’ call-and-response part I’d written for the chorus of “No Feeling.” I had imagined his voice would be one of many voices scream-singing it, and was excited for it to be a sort of Easter Egg on the album. But after tracking the original parts, he asked if he could try a higher harmony that he was hearing. As soon as he started singing it, all of our jaws dropped, and we all were looking at each other like ‘Oh shit! THAT’S the dude from Turnstile!’ His voice is so singular, and once he sang the part in *his* range, it was clear that the part now belonged to him and him alone…”

In the track’s dark animated video, ghost-like creatures celebrate their passage beyond time before being rescued by a submarine and brought into the fresh air. It serves as a hallucinogenic metaphor for the internal struggle to persevere and the weight of moving forward.
