Melodic Music Monday: January 12

Date:

Every Monday, we bring you a playlist filled with new tracks the Melodic staff has been listening to on repeat. Hear some of our latest obsessions below:

——

Doechii and SZA, “girl, get up.” – It takes a certain amount of confidence to expose the dark side to the music industry faced by women, but it takes a pioneer to express its effects for women of color, and there is much praise to be given (and respect) to both Doechii and SZA for continuing to enlighten and encourage themselves and a line of other artists to find their authenticity and truth in a place where many have been shot down before. So in light of New Year’s resolutions: girl, get up.

– Rae Bozeman

——

The Kid LAROI, “BACK WHEN YOU WERE MINE” – The album’s closer encapsulates the genres explored throughout the project, blending shimmering synths and twinkles with acoustic elements. Laroi’s vocal and melodic rapping appear while staying true to the 80s and early 2000s R&B influences. “BACK WHEN YOU WERE MINE” reflects on how everything feels different when you are together; defending your partner’s rights and wrongs while sacrificing parts of yourself in the process.

– Shauna Hilferty

——

bbno$, “diamonds are forever” – With his return signaling more of a creative reset rather than a goodbye, “diamonds are forever” dives into the vulnerable side of bbno$. The track embraces a distinct sonic shift from his recently released self-titled album, which strikingly encapsulated his famous energetic, carefree energy with hits like “it boy,” “1-800,” “hot topic” and more. “diamonds are forever” is the exact opposite, channeling a more thought-provoking “money isn’t everything” ideology with a reimagined melancholic vibe.

– Amber Bintliff

——

mgk, “times of my life” – Opening up on the guitar, Baker gets apologetic while reflecting on a past relationship. He expresses his sorrow for the problems they faced throughout their love, then also celebrates that his best moments were within that time together; “I never knew pain / Until the day I didn’t look back when I left you / And I know (x3) that you don’t wanna hear it / But you know (x5) that / The best times of my life / Were the ones that had you”. Baker had to suppress this in order for him to get through ending the relationship, burying it in order to heal.
