Lucy Dacus‘s Historian was a critical darling bolstered by the runaway success of lead single “Night Shift” that many critics put on their Best-Of 2018 lists. Following that by becoming a member of indie-supergroup boygenius (which also claimed members Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers), it seemed like only a matter of time until we got the follow-up to Historian that would hopefully launch her to the dizzying successes of Bridgers’s Punisher or Baker’s Little Oblivions.
After releasing fan-favorite “Thumbs” last month (which — go listen to it right now, because it’s wonderful), she has announced Home Video releasing on 6/25 with the lead single “Hot and Heavy” and its accompanying music video. Dacus wrote the following about the track:
I thought was writing “Hot & Heavy” about an old friend, but I realized along the way that it was just about me outgrowing past versions of myself. So much of life is submitting to change and saying goodbye even if you don’t want to. Now whenever I go to places that used to be significant to me, it feels like trespassing the past. I know that the teen version of me wouldn’t approve of me now, and that’s embarrassing and a little bit heartbreaking, even if I know intellectually that I like my life and who I am.
The track is as emotionally vulnerable as Dacus’s past work, but the instrumentation on this reminds me of The War on Drugs in the way that it builds up with lush guitars and a driving piano melody. On top of this, Lucy’s announced a huge U.S. tour featuring openers Bartees Strange, Bachelor, and even a couple co-headlining dates with Julien Baker and “special guests”.
