After years of carving out a niche in confessional indie pop and dream rock, Low Girl have finally released their highly anticipated debut album Is It Too Late To Freak Out?
What began as Sarah Cosgrove’s solo songwriting outlet has evolved into Low Girl, the Bedford four-piece band. The album comes from self-reflection and is brought to life through collaboration. Their sound on the album is so unique – it’s traditionally indie, but such a well-rounded record.
Speaking on the album, Sarah Cosgrove said:
“This album is an exploration of late twenties panic and a belated coming of age. We wanted to explore all the different feelings that go into loss, and how my experiences with OCD hindered the process. It’s often said that healing is non-linear, so we wanted the album to reflect that chaotic ordering with moments of joy and hope interspersed. The overarching theme is hope, and finding something to ground yourself in as you start again.”
Their single “White Gown,” the final preview before the album dropped, is a must-listen. It opens strong with an electrifying, addictive guitar riff, a pulsing beat, and an extremely catchy hook. It’s a bright, glimmering indie-pop track that we want to keep playing over and over.
Across the album, Low Girl manage to blend indie hooks with something super exciting. Opening track “This House Is On Fire” is a storytelling introduction, driven by gentle keys, drums, and striking vocals that pull you straight in. “2007” feels almost eerie in its opening, showing the band’s impressive range in genre and sound.
“Overgrown,” one of the earlier singles, is a total earworm: easy listening, catchy, uplifting, and an all-round dreamy pop track. It’s sparkly, summery, and explores themes of personal growth.
The closing track “I Love All My Friends” ends the record on an emotional but hopeful note. It’s really beautiful, starting sad, but closing with a quiet optimism. It has that same feeling as “Don’t Delete the Kisses” by Wolf Alice.
I’ve only recently discovered Low Girl, and I’ve become obsessed. Is It Too Late To Freak Out? feels like an album I’ll keep coming back to. If you’re looking for a new record to fall in love with this week, this should definitely be on your list.
