Australian trio Little Quirks have released their first single of the year following their 2024 self-titled album. The new single, “Honey,” delivers a 70s pop-inspired sound as the trio weighs the pitfalls of a relationship. With its racing guitars and brash drums, the song is perfect for lovers of Brandi Carlile and Lucius.
The song quickly locks into a nostalgic indie-rock sound, led by acoustic guitar and propelled by a racing drumbeat and sharp electric guitars. A booming kick and snare drum set the foundation of the rhythm, adding brightness and texture to the soundscape. It’s these quieter textures throughout the song that emphasize the upbeat tone and uplift “Honey.” As noted before, the instrumentation in this song is dense — but this isn’t a drawback. In fact, each tightly arranged part sits perfectly within its own frequencies, so the sound is never overwhelming. This song highlights how a good song doesn’t need to be overly complicated to be fun and infectious.
Little Quirks’ Abbey Toole stated that the song was “written a couple of years ago [but] we always kept hold of it” until the moment felt right. The confident tone of the song pairs well with lyrics that describe a “love-hate relationship,” according to the band. In the pre-chorus, the band moves between metaphor and imagery with the lines, “I loss myself when I’m alone with you,” followed by, “the rain won’t bring all the things I want.” This use of fun and quick sentiments is further highlighted in the chorus: “I know it’s you and me honey / I can’t decide where I’m alive.” These lyrics reflect a love that has run its course and is beginning to end.
Little Quirks offers listeners a new taste of what’s to come for the band, with a more rock-infused sound that blends perfectly with the trio’s signature style. If you’re hoping to hear “Honey” live, the band is currently supporting The Cat Empire on their national tour. Tickets can be found here.
“Honey” by Little Quirks is out now.
