Pop rock artist Ari Bose grapples with commitment and in his new single, “Target Practice.” The single was released alongside his new 7-track EP Situationship.
2024 was Bose’s ultimate breakout, releasing four singles prior to this new EP. The singer continues to grow into his own as he has developed an intimate yet loyal audience, gaining thousands of streams across his music. In terms of sound, Bose has also developed an identity that blends toned-down emo/pop punk with indie rock elements, all of which are consistently evident in his new projects.
“Target Practice” was not only written by Bose, but was also recorded, mixed and mastered by the artist as well. His multi-talented efforts are especially evident in his production. As he is still fresh in the pop rock scene, Bose emulates sounds from bands like The Band CAMINO, Bilmuri, and The Home Team.
This new single tackles the idea of self-destruction and the urge to let go of something good. Bose sings, “I’m throwing away someone good / But I don’t think you understood,” as he tries to get unresolved feelings off his chest. The singer tries to share that his feelings for this person are not what they used to be and, to avoid wasting anyone’s time and energy, he has to let go of their relationship: “It’s better I hurt you now / Than hope that you just fall out.”
This entire song goes deeper into Bose’s guilt for the way he treated his past flame. He goes as far as to admit his wrongdoings, “’cause I know I was dishonest / Reassured you that I want this,” placing blame solely onto himself. Despite this, he says, “best intentions all the time / Yeah I’d never hurt you in my mind,” trying to reassure himself that he broke up with this person for the best of reasons.
Inevitably, he reminds himself that he is foolish for entertaining their connection when he knew he was not ready for such a commitment: “But I’m stupid / It’s too soon for this.”
