Sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell of the band Larkin Poe rocked NYC’s Webster Hall on Saturday night as part of a stop on their Blood Harmony tour.
Electrofolk duo Tall Heights opened the show with songs spanning their large discography – from 2015’s “Back to Autumn” to 2022’s “Hear it Again.” Vocalist and guitarist Tim Harrington belted out the bands lyrics as cellist Paul Wright played along to “Horse to Water,” while touring percussionist Paul Dumas jammed along. The pair continued with “The Mountain,” “No Man Alive,” and a bluesy version of blink-182’s “Dammit” before closing with a stripped-down acoustic of “To Be Young.”
Nashville-based Larkin Poe kept the folk going with their blend of southern rock ’n’ roll. The duo, made up of sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, have established themselves as leaders of the southern rock revival from their soulful lyrics to their blues-heavy sound. On tour to promote their most recent album Blood Harmony, the duo opens with three songs from the album: “Strike Gold,” “Kick The Blues,” and “Summertime Sunset.”
The tracks give them the opportunity to shred and show off their guitar skills – with Rebecca on guitar and lead vocals, and Megan on the lap steel guitar providing harmonies. Larkin Poe has a impressive catalog under their belt, and treat their captive audience to songs spanning from 2017’s “Preachin’ Blues” to 2020’s “She’s A Self Made Man”, then 2018’s “Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues” to “Georgia Off My Mind” from Blood Harmony.
The night was full of audience connection: from when the duo were brought shots on stage before performing “Southern Comfort” and toasted with the crowd, to when Rebecca noticed a fans sign in the audience requesting for them to play “Mad As A Hatter;” a song written as a tribute to their grandfather who struggled with mental illness, and to which the duo obliged.
The night continued with more tracks from the Blood Harmony album including “Might as Well Be Me,” “Bolt Cutters & The Family Name,” and “Bad Spell” before ending the night with an encore of “Deep Stays Down.”
