Six months ago, a little movie called K-Pop Demon Hunters made its debut on Netflix. You have probably heard of it, or listened to its soundtrack, or watched it again and again and again, as it quickly became a global phenomenon. Whether fans were attached to the storyline, the quirky personalities of HUNTR/X, or the catchy songs, K-Pop Demon Hunters redefined the power of K-pop. It also reignited a love for boybands and girl groups in general, which brings us to JYT.
JYT is a new type of boyband, with a sound and style that represents today’s generation. Its five members chose to be with each other rather than form under outside forces, allowing them to create natural chemistry and brotherhood with one another. They have spent the past year developing their dance-driven pop sound, and have trained with top choreographers—led by Nick DeMoura (Justin Bieber)—to get their moves for the stage just right. The result comes in the form of their debut single, “What U Want.”
An alluring fusion of slick beats, fresh rhythms, and pop melodies, “What U Want” is basically all you could ask for in a debut single. The boys get to show off their rhythm with fast-paced and fluid lyrics, but they also treat us to slower, melodic moments that round out the song. All the while, they get into a relatable situation that most have experienced in a relationship. There are times when you just want to know what your partner is thinking and where it’s all going, and “What U Want” captures this tension. Sometimes love isn’t always black and white.
JYT is signed to Republic Records and to GRAMMY-nominated songwriter/producer Freddy Wexler. About JYT, Wexler shares,
“From the moment these five kids stood in a room together, I knew we had something special. JYT isn’t a manufactured boyband, they chose eachother. I’m thrilled to be partnering with Monte (Monte Lipman, REPUBLIC Founder and Chairman) and the incredible team at Republic, with whom I’ve shared some of the most pivotal moments of my career. America hasn’t launched a global boy band in decades, and these kids are about to change that.”
A multi-part docuseries chronicling JYT’s formation and ongoing rise is currently in production.
