Universal Pictures has officially announced casting for its highly anticipated Snoop Dogg biopic, with Outer Banks breakout star Jonathan Daviss set to portray the iconic Long Beach rapper. The film, currently untitled, marks a major milestone for both the studio and Death Row Pictures.
Directed by Craig Brewer (Dolemite Is My Name, Coming 2 America, Hustle and Flow), the film is co-written by Brewer and Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther). Featuring music from Snoop Dogg’s legendary career, the project is produced by Snoop Dogg, Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker, President of Death Row Pictures.
This marks the first feature under Death Row Pictures’ new overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment and Studios, a significant step as the label expands its legacy beyond music into film and visual storytelling.
Daviss, best known for his role as Pope Heyward on Netflix’s hit series Outer Banks, will take on the transformative role of the 17-time Grammy-nominated artist. The 25-year-old actor has also appeared in Netflix’s Do Revenge, and continues to build momentum as a rising star in Hollywood.
The film will chronicle Snoop Dogg’s rise from Long Beach to global stardom, beginning with his 1993 debut album Doggystyle, produced by Dr. Dre and featuring hit singles like “What’s My Name?” and “Gin and Juice.” It arrives at a time when music biopics are having a cultural moment, following the critical and commercial success of Bob Marley: One Love and the Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown, with several more projects in the pipeline, including biopics on Bruce Springsteen and The Beatles.
Snoop Dogg continues to be a prolific force in music, film, and television. His recent releases include the Dr. Dre–produced Missionary and the single “Iz It a Crime?,” adding to a career that spans decades and genres.
More details on the film’s title and release date are expected soon.
