My Chemical Romance fans (including myself) have been anxious to hear any whisperings of new MCR projects, as the band has yet to follow up their 2010 album Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, even though they reunited in 2019.
On March 12, 2026, John Cameron Mitchell, writer and director of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, may have revealed the next MCR project.
In conversation with Bob the Drag queen on the Only Child podcast, the playwright hinted at a theater collaboration with the alt-rock powerhouses. The reveal took place during a conversation about the grueling show schedule for Oh Mary! in which Mitchell is currently starring as Mary Lincoln Todd.
Mitchell teases, “My Chemical Romance, who I am working on a project with for theatre, they do one show a week,” in reference to the ongoing Long Live the Black Parade tour, which recently wrapped up its Latin American leg. The band will now head to Europe, before performing a second North American stretch this summer.
Aside from the tease, there has yet to be any formal announcement or mention of the project on the band’s side, and it seems Mitchell is keeping things under wraps for the time being, stating “It’s a secret, it’s not announced yet, but I’m gonna give you a little zzz there, that’s all you’re getting.”
My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way mentioned in a 2021 interview with 98 KUPD that they had been approached in the past about a theatre adaptation, but that he felt the record hadn’t yet “lived long enough” and wanted to wait, but that he was now “open to the idea.”
Mitchell closes the tease reiterating that “Nothing’s been officially announced. That’s all I can say for now. There are papers to sign, but honestly, they’re wonderful people.”
With no further indication of a timeline and lack of a formal announcement, fan theories have started circulating, hoping for an immersive adaption akin to Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera, with others hopeful for a more jukebox style like that of American Idiot directed by Michael Mayer.
Despite Way’s aforementioned interest in the stage adaptation, the band has yet to make any comment. However, fans speculate something is in the works with the band recently wiping their X account, which followed cryptic Instagram posts and stage design elements. Hopefully, new details, or a new project, will be coming later this year upon the conclusion of their world tour.
