Whether intentional or not, Hazlett creates music that moves listeners. From the thoughtful lyrics to the cinematic melodies, his songs constantly offer a release that can be felt on many levels. In February, for instance, Hazlett’s “doing my best” was intimate yet powerful, speaking to the parts of the soul that could use a soft vocal line or a heartfelt lyric. As he gears up for the release of his upcoming album, last night you said you missed me, Hazlett continues to fuel our emotions while expanding his artistry, which we find on the project’s latest single “mountain of a memory.”
On “mountain of a memory,” Hazlett battles with intrusive thoughts. For the most part, the song is stripped-back and low-key, giving way to Hazlett’s resonant vocals. He sits in his feelings, entertaining troubling thoughts about a breakup. Over the warm strumming, he sings, “I’m the feeling you won’t think about someday” and “Call it off / Be alone / I’m the ghost that never made it home,” allowing these thoughts to fester. Eventually, they turn into a mountain that seems too high to climb over. Still, while Hazlett claims that he’s “a mountain of a memory,” he seems to make it over his own mountain of memories in his head. And then, just as quickly as Hazlett reaches the top of that mountain, just as suddenly as he sings out, the song is over. The climb is over. The thoughts have passed. For now.
About “mountain of a memory,” Hazlett shares,
“Sometimes the best advice we have for people is that we never listen to ourselves. I think letting a worry wander in your head is a recipe for trouble. The smallest of thoughts can become bigger without you even noticing. So, my advice has been to say them out loud. Whether that’s to somebody or even yourself in a mirror, some things just need an outlet. The idea being, once it’s out of your head and in the open, it’s already lost a little power and you can see it for what it is. This song was that mirror and me trying to take my own advice for a change.”
After opening for Noah Kahan on July 4 in London, Hazlett will spend the rest of the summer on the festival circuit in Europe. In September, he will then embark on his second 2025 North American headline tour. The tour starts in Montreal on September 8, make its way through cities like Nashville, Boston, and Denver, and then wrap in Dallas on October 30.
