Full of witty analogies and a catchy house beat, Tom Avery’s debut single “Sugar” will move you to your feet

Date:

Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter, Tom Avery, makes their debut with “Sugar,” a track following the troubled sweetness behind a hidden toxic relationship.

With a house beat reminiscent of Glass Animals, the song begins with a simple electric guitar riff. Unlike most alt-pop and house, however, the first verse stays stripped down, and later builds to the chorus. Avery uses sound effects, such as breath and bells, to emphasize words and lines in their chorus. Moving to the second verse, more backing vocals are layered to carry to the bridge. The synth and same electric guitar from the first few seconds of the song are heard again as Avery sings “Tell me your secrets, but I know you won’t / And you never will”. The bridge holds the lesson that through all of the deception, this relationship will not change and neither will the person doing it harm.

This may be Tom Avery’s first single, but it is clear they have been working towards this release for a long time. Avery asks listeners to “stay tuned” for their next project. Until then, stream “Sugar” here and keep up with them below.
